Experiencing and exploring Extended Reality!

On May 5 and 6, the Places Festival once again transformed the Bochumer Straße in Gelsenkirchen into the #1 meeting place for the German XR scene. We are excited about the days full of innovation, exciting experiences in the XR world and the exchange within the XR community as well as between tech industry and society.
In our locations, the latest XR applications with different thematic focuses were ready for the visitors. Haus Reichstein was all about how VR and AR contribute to urban change, the Old Supermarket was about social cohesion, the mxr lab gave visitors a glimpse into the future of learning, and the Vroom had all the hottest VR games around. This years new location, the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche, introduced users to VR, AR, Metaverse and was a great place for networking.

These were the themes of the Places Festival 2023

Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche

Discover. Metaverses. Together.

The buzzword “metaverse” is present everywhere, but it is usually difficult to get started with the topic. What exactly is behind this journey into the metaverse? Where does VR technology actually come from and where is it heading? How does the concept of “avatars” work and what possibilities does virtual space already offer today?

Haus Reichstein

Design. Innovation. Urban.

Working, living, leisure and mobility – how do we shape our future life in cities? How will our homes become more sustainable, our neighborhoods more livable and our workplaces more flexible? We are looking for new answers from the XR industry to questions that currently everyone is thinking about.

mxr Lab

Impart. Knowledge. Digitally.

To learn new things and to further deepen our knowledge in a specific field is a constant part of our lives – from childhood up to old age. Today, the technologies of Extended Reality open up entirely new possibilities for learning. These possibilities can be explored in the mxr lab.

Alter Supermarkt

Connect. People. Interactively.

Because of social media, dialogue is becoming increasingly brutalized and downtowns are dying because of online shopping. Technology is often blamed for the isolation and division of society. How can VR & AR help to create new meeting spaces, new economies and new forms of togetherness?

Display windows along the street

Think. Business. Immersive.

In the sign of the energy crisis, climate change and changing shopping behavior, the question arises how to develop a resource-efficient and sustainable economy. Especially in the retail sector, innovative approaches are in demand, which will be searched for, found and subsequently presented in the shop windows in the form of augmented reality prototypes as part of the Places Hackathon.
